Some art? - 09-13-2010, 05:27 PM

A few days ago Tim posted some long exposure shots of a bird taking off and there was a discussion about art that followed which got me thinking. One of the responders posted a link to a lady’s site that was using motion in her images. I checked out some of her images and they looked like they were mostly shots of trees with the camera shaking around. While I was out recently I took a couple of my own shots focusing on out of focus images. What do you think??? Art?

Nothing personal. but this type of stuff makes me think "pilot error". You have to be Arthur Morris to be able to get away with passing blurry images off as art.

Thanks for your feedback, it is much appreciated. I like honesty. I personally don’t even think Art Morris pulls it off.

Bob, kudos for trying. On mine I didn't have "pilot error", didn't even have a cockpit alarm warning, just crash and burn!

Well on these I more or less just pointed the camera, put it in MF and focused it away from in focus and took a shot. Sometimes I get the feeling that’s all you have to do to make “art.” So what is art anyway???

Great question Bob. As I was typing my first reply here, I started thinking about it on a different level.

I guess that you would have received a different sort of responses if you would have just posted the images without the back story and said "this is my art".

I don't have an answer for your question, but if I were buying pieces for my living room wall I'd be looking more at #3 and #4 and less at #1 and #2. Hope that helps.

As I am thinking about it the idea that comes into my mind is that art sort of has to have a point to really work. I am sure that this isn’t always the case as art doesn’t seem to really have much of a solid definition. These “photos” were more of a commentary on taking blurry/smeared pictures and calling them art. When I look at them in that light then I think they are art though I do not think they are pretty or interesting in any way in their own right.

I can’ understand the idea of wanting to do something different when you already have tons of a certain type of image and wanting to experiment to come up with something new. My thinking is that to successfully do this it helps to have something you are trying to say or show with the image. Making a blurry image for the sake of making a blurry image just doesn’t hold much water I think.

Agreed. I've received his bulletin for years and lately I've been really wondering what's on his mind with this stuff.

So all those deleted files were "art" huh??? Who'd have figured it?
