Little Brown/Ground Skink (added photo) - 09-30-2010, 08:44 AM

I finally made it out to BBSP early yesterday morning to do a little bit of shooting in the grassland prairie and it was nice and cool too. I found a few things to play with and this little lizard was one interesting critter. It was hunting bugs in a giant ragweed plant when I found it. Most of its tail was missing but didn't slow it down one bit...I made a few shots before it zoomed off into the undergrowth to hide. Made with D80 Nikkor AF 105/2.8D on a tripod. Exif is in the photo.

I love the dew on the scales!

The lizard is a Little Brown/Ground Skink (Scincella lateralis). They are generally uncooperative little photo subjects so this is a great capture.

Thanks for the comment everyone! Chris I wasn't sure about the ID...thanks for the help! It was a shy one for sure I got 6 frames before it bolted for cover and was gone. It was great getting out again and doing some shooting.

Yep. I was gonna say that looks like a skink to me. They are sooo fast when they wanna be. They are like a snake with legs.

I've seen them on the ground but never on a bush off the ground and thought it was a snake when I first saw it...I was surprised I got any photos at all...here's a snap shot of the damaged tail.

Awww...it's so cute, Jim!
Ragweed=ACHOO!
I'm hoping in a couple weekends to venture to the prairie of BBSP searching for dewy butterflies.
