Any intrest in creating our own field guide to Texas birds sticky? - 01-07-2011, 01:16 PM

So yesterday after purchasing the National Wildlife Federation's Field Guide to Birds of North America, I thought that this book appears to be a great reference book but what about a field guide for Texas. Well there are books of Texas birds but man that's another dime I would have to put out.

As I have visited this site for the past several month, I have viewed some fantastic captures by members of this forum. I thought it would be great to have those photos in a somewhat organized manner and identify where the bird was photographed. I am not suggesting we create a detailed field guide but one in which we could cross reference areas with photos of the birds found there.

We already have a sticky of great places to go shoot. Why not a visual to go along with it?

Perhaps I am not seeing the "too much" factor?

Thanks Bruce. I've bookmarked the site. And his photos and catalog is incredible.

But most photos I looked at didn't state what area the bird was located. I just thought if we had a dedicated thread, members could post a photo of a bird along with the general area found and season captured. So if I searched Brazos Bend State Park in that thread, I would get a list of posts with different birds found there. Or vise-versa, put in the name of a bird and see where members took the photograph.

For what it’s worth I have found that many parks and refuges offer bird checklists that include seasonal occurrence. They are usually free or very inexpensive, about one dollar. Many are downloadble from the net for free. There is also a site called ebird that has an incredible amount of information about birds, where they are found and when. These sorts of resources can save you a lot of effort vs making a thread here.

Your example of Brazos Bend State Park is a good one for this. The park sells a checklist for $1 that gives very good data for when and even where to look for birds.

That's a great site (thanks for posting) but I thought the same thing. It's great as-is but some type of data catalog to go along with the photos would make it an even more fantastic resource.
