Trinity River Bird Rookery - 03-16-2011, 07:04 PM

Critique: NC:

Took a quick trip to the TRBR to look around. Snapped about 700+ photo so starting to filter. Just did a fast one to show. It was a long way off and heavy crop. Just need to extend the deck half way across the lake and presto everyone will be happy. D300s f/4 1/1600 -1.33 500MM took about 13:30 today.

David, I go there a lot & you are right about the distance the birds keep. This shot is outstanding for those conditions. I have some much closer that aren't as good as yours here.

I like the framing, wing spread, action...okay, I like the shot a lot. Nice job David. How did you like shooting with the 500mm fixed lens? Shoots a little differently from your old zoom I bet.

Excellent teaser image, David - I like how you captured the curve in the wings.

Thanks Leon, I just like standing there and taking in everything.

Just got it yesterday and thought I would try it out under some bad conditions to see what it would do. Can you see my grin! I was laughing at myself several times as I kept trying to reach up and adjust the zoom. The 200-400 is one fine lens but this one sure it something. I just have to learn and change my style. I also tried the 1.4 and my first impression is I can't tell much at all but got to look some more. I had one chance to make the jump and I couldn't pass it up. I look forward to using under better conditions.

Thanks - as you go over the Trinity River bridge be looking to your right. You will see the all the birds. Take the first exit....at the bottom of the exit make a U-turn and travel back west on the feeder. You will come to a dead end and see the parking on the left. Your there. Note-no restroom. If you got to go then travel up the feeder again until you get to the entrance of the park and there is one farther in at the buiding. There will be mybe two or three trees with nest with in a big lens reach. The entire back side is full. So close but way to far. Early morning light is best or you would be shooting into the sun in the afternoon. It was crudy, overcast and almost mid day when I was there. I will have to try an early morning.

Yes, it's really a very nice place. A lot of fishermen launch their boat there and also a lot of people fishing along the shores. It's a tumbs up place for me.

That "changing your style" with the 500mm is called "moving forward or moving backward". No zoom ring on the big boy! Kinda makes it tough when you have water in both places doesn't it?
