High Island Visit - 03-18-2011, 04:16 PM

Critique: NC:

Made an early run to check out the rookery. Egrets loving on each other and trying to tidy their nest. Spoonbill's putting on a show but didn't really see any nest. Two other photographers were there. One from Florida passing through from being down in the valley. The other photographer had something I wanted.....a mosquito hat net. They were tough. Over cast with some sun breaking through later. My finger got stuck on the shutter since it was my first time.

I like it. Sweet shot David. Glad to see that you found the place OK. Looks like the new lens is working fine.

You're hooked, I bet! Great shot. Nice soft light. Was there any sign of the tripod controversy?

Thanks everyone I appreciate your comments. Tim, thanks for the pointers, found everything ok. Bruce - no problems just two tripoders including me, no birders. Would have gladly moved if needed. I started out under the canopy but as the sun was up really liked moving back to the first and second platform in order to keep the sun to my side as much as possible. The lens was spot on and performed above my expectations. The guy from Florida had two cameras and handholding his canon 500mm. That would have wore me out. I would prefer going on a weekday if at all possible since I am off every other Friday. Wonder how late evening does??

In the past early to late evening worked out fairly well, the sun reflected from the bottom of the lake adding much needed fill light. You will see more birders in the afternoon than in the morning - due to the fact that afternoons are slow times for birding and the nesters are always present.

Lovely image of this spoonie. I was recently there too and I mistook some of the mosquitos for birds.
