A trip to High Island 3/27/11 - 03-28-2011, 10:29 AM

Critique: NC:

The weather turned out great for the Rookery @ High Island. I proved that I can fill my whole new 32gb card in a day! (2,712 12 bit RAW shots!) The Songbirds aren't there yet, although a Painted Bunting and a B&W Warbler were spotted @ Boy Scout Woods.

There was no indication of the new tripod policy as yet. The new "tripod" platform is pretty much too far way and not in good position compared to the non-tripod ones. No signs or people enforcing the new rules, however.

Just love those shots Bruce. #1 and #4 are my favorites. I had planned to go there today but it just looked too overcast. What time of the day did you do your shooting?

These are all terrific Bruce. I particularly like the first shot and the spoons - great stuff! Thanks for the look at the platform. I really need to get there sometime.

32G's Wow! I'll be waiting for Part II, III Series! Are they building a platform ON the island?
If so that is really going to disturb the birds IMO.

Thanks, all. It's nice to go at this time, before the mayhem of Songbird Migration ensues.

Thanks, Sandy. The platform is on the same path as the old ones, not on the Island. Trust me, I have a TON of shots to edit!

It's 100 miles from our area on the SW side of Houston. With good roads, it can be done in an hour and a half. If you do go, try to get an early start, so you can make the loop including the Bolivar ferry one direction. (ending @ Smith Oaks for the best light.) Anahuac NWR is nearby as well as Smith Point.

The breeding plumage is magnificent, and there was just enough breeze to open it up for the show.

Thanks, I was a bit leery of the weather forecast, but it was clear as a bell on the coast..

I was held in a Spoonbill nest for a few hours. It wasn't too bad, except for when Mama & Daddy Spoonbill fed me...
