Yes, they can bite....but only when provoked. They are really an unusual insect and fascinating to study through the lens.

Great shot and hand seems just fine in the pic. I'm curious as to why you used 1/2500. Looks like you might have had to increase the exposure in pp or bump up the brightness quite a bit, which added a bit of noise. Not necessarily a bad thing - just wondering, that's all.

Unexpected find of the mantis on my backdoor screen.....just grabbed the camera and shot without taking the time to think at all about settings.

I did bump up the brightness as you ascertained and was pleased to get pretty crisp clarity considering I was shooting one-handed.
