Excellent, Marc - super colors, and the dark background makes the flowers stand out.

Nice work! Are the dark backgrounds done through mostly lighting or post-processing? You have a great look going.

Magnificent photos! The only issue I see is there's no exif data. How is a novice like myself going to learn from these great shots without a little help from my friends?

Hi Melissa,

You're going to laugh, but I point the flash through the cardboard tube of a roll of paper towels. This forms a snoot to give me a strong, narrow spotlight effect.

Using a really old "head and handle" type Sunpak flash with lots of power lets me set the exposure up with minimum ambient light effect.

I generally use a piece of dark fabric in the background and always shoot in low light time of day, but sometimes I have to darken the background in post processing:

I was typing a post (below yours) when you posted. I explained a little bit about the lighting, but I'll have to check the files for exposure data. I can tell you that I generally shoot at base ISO on a D70 or a D200. All of these are taken with a really cheap old Sigma 24-135 zoom (bought it used for $ 70. many years ago) normally at around f6 f10. (The exif date is being pulled out when I reduce the file size and save it)
