Great Blue Heron and Reddish Egret.
The thing sticking below is the bird's tongue. This is due to an injury to the membrane at the underside of the bill which created a hole that allowed the tongue (which is pointed) to fall through, and there is no way that it can be retracted. I've seen this before, with at least one GBH, but usually terns. I observed the GBH with the afliction on a number of occasions feeding normally, so I don't think it life threatening. regards~onlybill
