I headed over to the San Antonio Zoo for their members only 7:30am opening time to see if some cooler morning weather provided more interesting photo ops. What I found is that many species were waiting for their morning meals and were more active than normal.
One of my favorite species at the zoo is the diminuitive Black-footed Cat (
Felis nigripes). This little cat of Southern Africa is the smallest cat in the world, an adult being the size of a half-grown domestic cat. They are, therefore, cute as hell. However, they are apparently not very "personalble" little beasts. Don't let appearances fool you, this is one ornery, unsociable critter!
I believe that attempts to domesticate and keep them have been unsuccesful due to their flighty and fiesty nature.
I had never seen it out before for more than a few seconds since they are very shy as well. However, I think it was hoping I would feed it since it sprinted back to the building area out of sight when I walked up, but quickly came back out, right up to the edge of the cage.
The wire didn't help the photo shoot, but these photos will have to do until I photograph a wild one!
