After Work Play...Baytown Eagle - 10-03-2011, 09:03 PM

Critique: NC:

I keep trying to get over there but every time I do my job sends me to Texas City...Well, not today! Got over there as soon as I dropped my freight in La Porte. When I first got there to the sight around 4:45 pm in BT I spotted an osprey over the golf course pond. Not too much water left in it. I hope this doesn't effect the eagles but I'm afraid we might be waiting for longer periods as they search for food and come back to the nest with a fish.

A few people drove by to ask to see if I seen anything. No no no I kept saying. Then a little waiting and checking my camera settings there she was!
She came in at an angle. At first I didn't see her land so I walked down a little bit down the road to see if she has a new landing perch somewhere. No dice. So I walked back to my truck and ha ha the trick was on me...She was perched on a broken branch way off to the right from where we are used to on that big dead pine tree. I heard she likes this tree as I met a couple photographers later on after she flew off. She only stayed for about 10 minutes if that. I heard gun fire in the background! The shots were loud. Assuming they were pops from a 12 gage. I'm thinking today was opening season for dove for the South Zone. But I don't see how anyone can hunt in that area. I may give Parks and Wildlife a call in the morning to let them know. This made the eagle very nervous and it made me very angry. I just don't think hunting is allowed in this area.
The gun shots I'm guessing were about half a mile away. But maybe closer.

Here is my one favorite shot taken this evening. Taken with a Nikon Manual Focus 300mm F4.5 lens, Nikon D300s.

Normandy will be perfect for when I go to Channelview for my job and that's a lot! See you soon I'm sure. I got directions last night again. When is the light best for Normandy?

Nice shot, Sandy. You mentioned water...Cedar Bayou Stream is just east of the Baytown nest by maybe 1/2 mile at the most. Right? Just head down Spur 55 to the bridge. And the bay is nearby also. I think the eagles are in a good location.

There are in a good location. They do have a nice surrounding of food abundance in the Bayou and Bay.
But they used to fish out of the pond across the street and that was convenient. That was what I meant to say.

As far Normandy nest goes. I haven't been over there yet. I heard it's across the street from Fuddruckers. I was told you can see the nest from the road?

If you walk across the street from Fudruckers and go left, the will be a church with a chain link fence. Past the end of the fence there will be a spot that you can look up and kinda sorta to the right and see'em...there was an old rusty cable sign (I think) that kinda marked the spot...have'nt been there yet this year...

I just went to Normandy and there are 2 eagles out there. I was amazed to see them out there, perched on top of a tree limb. The light was fading so I'm sure my shots aren't too good. I only had a 70-200 with me too. Definately need a bigger lens out there. I think that has to be one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
