Brazos Bend State Park - 11-04-2011, 09:33 PM

Critique: NC:

Made a run at the park this morning. Frost on the ground and not much moving at first. As the day started heating up activity picked up too. Many birds in flocks flying over and landing in the park. They received a little over 5 inches of rain when the whole area got it several weeks ago and it helped. Water still low, but even Creekfield has water in it again.

Here is a sampling of what I got today.

First shot I managed to get of one. They don't like people and don't hang around long. I was changing to a 1.4x extender to get a little more reach when it flew off.

Nice series Doug...looks like more bird activity than the last time I was there...ditto Leon's comment...like the kingfisher...agree that they are really hard to photograph...

Nice shots Doug. Love the second one. Good to hear that they got some benefit from the rain.

Thanks all for the comments. Tim, the Red-shouldered Hawk was calling back and forth all morning long to another one a short distance away. They were pretty much all over 40 Acre, Pilant and the area east of 40 Acre the whole time I was there. First time flight shot of a hawk that was decent.

It's a female Belted Kingfisher by the way.

Like the Hawks. Good to know they are hanging around right now. Good catch on the Kingfisher! They don't stay put long.

Great stuff Doug. Really like the hawk shots. I've been avoiding BBSP for a couple of months with the drought. Looks like it might be time for a visit since they got some rain.

Thanks David and Patrick. Water levels are still very low, but an improvement from the last several months. With the number of birds flying in and out of the park there are some nice shots to be had. Not a skeeter in sight either. Probably helped having frost on the ground.

Very nice series. Waiting for another rain so I can go find some ducks.
