Many thanks to Ron, Michael,Patti, Howard, and Johnny. Hey Michael, I don't think that there is any question but that the fawn survival this year is below, and in some cases, way below, average. However, I have heard that on some ranches where there is an extensive year round feeding program that the survival rate is OK.
BTW, the buck in image #1 is over 8 years old and probably 10.

Hey Bill,
There's no way for me to know for sure but I think that they feed year round... but water is a problem / predator attractor. I think that everything is compressed into watering hole areas, including predators. That said, I'm not on the lease so I can't say for sure. I know that some high fence areas have extensive watering going on. Gotta protect the assets

And what assets they are. Deer hunting has surpassed the cattle business on many ranches.

Oh absolutely. I know people that guide and sell $20,000 bucks... none for me thanks. I work with a guy that breeds bucks as side job. You should see some of the racks on those things...

Bill,
Any chance you could share the area you were in and how you got access?

Outstanding collection Bill!
Love all of the buck shots and the coyote. All four of the bird shots are superb too, especially the tail up of the Wren. | | | |

Thanks John, Jim[2], Fred, Keith, and Jason.
I got access to this ranch through the Valley Land Fund Photo Contest in 2002. The ranch owners are wonderful people and have been very generous in allowing me access to their ranch, which is a mecca for wildlife.
There are ranches that cater to photographers for a fee. Here are a few:
Dos Venades Ranch
Santa Clara Ranch
Martin Refuge, Javelina Ranch
There are others. I have been on the Martin Refuge and it is an excellent choice. Wonderful photo blinds are available with bait, which is necessary to get close to your subjects. All of the critters in my images above, with the exception of the wren and the coyote were attracted by baiting.
