Rockport Whooper Escape.... 11/21/11 - 11-26-2011, 11:56 PM

Critique: NC:

Made a quick trip to Rockport Sunday & Monday to catch up with the recently returned Whoopers. They are doing quite well and are expected to have record numbers this year. Went out on the "Skimmer" with Capt Tommy Moore out of Fulton Harbor for the 3rd time. We had Dolphins chasing us too! $50 for a half day excursion, well worth it. He also has private charters and a new land blind, also $50 the half day out by Goose Island State park. Complimentary "Chateau de Cardboard" vino is provided!

Thanks, guys. On some excursions you get closer to the Whoopers than others. This is one time that a 500 or 600mm would be a huge help. I shoot my 300mm F4 with the 1.4x, 1.7x and 2x converters. The 2x is a manual focus proposition, 600mm F8 with stopping down further required for sharpness. Not ideal by a long stretch. The D7000's pixel density allows better quality crops, however.

Outstanding variety of captures, especially the Whooper. The Curlew and Osprey are my favorites.

Enjoyed the set. Thanks for sharing the info and adding to my list. Can you add anything about the blind? Didn't see anything on the web.

The blind is brand new this season. You'll have to call them up for details. They aren't the most web savvy folks, so the page doesn't show changes quickly. He made arrangements with the landowner. Sounds great, though.
