Help needed to figure this out - 11-30-2011, 12:25 PM

Critique: NC:

These were taken by a motion activated low res camera at the deer feeder in my Mom's front yard. We can't figure out what the green reflection is from in these two shots. Seems to move with the deer's head and only on this one deer..... radioactive antlers?
Anyone have any ideas????

Almost looks like "lens flare" from the eyes. Some kind of reflection going on.

Definitely a mystery :)
Was just this one deer and moved with the head. It is reflecting green and the eyes are a white reflection........

Good point, the shutter speed is probably incredibly slow, so it could just be an artifact that the reflecting eyes are so much brighter so you see the movement, but since everything else is darker you don't see the blur since they're mostly stationary. Ok, what I'm trying to say makes sense in my head, but it's not translating well.

I find it interesting that the three deer in the first pic all have different colors reflected from their eyes. You would think they would reflect the same color.

The white reflection is a reflection off of the exterior or cornea and would be the same color as the flash or maybe slightly yellowed depending on the surface color of the eye.

Colored reflections are from the interior of the eye, which is what red eye is. Many animals give "green eye" while humans give "red eye". The color is a result of the retina's color as well as the fluid and passing thru the cornea twice (going in and coming out).

And from the little green aliens that live in some animals. Cats especially (flame suit on...)

Looks like some kind of reflective material caught in the antlers...maybe?

May I take your shot and post it on a deer site and see what they think?

I'm not sure it is directly associated with the deer or it's antlers. If you look closely in the second shot, the green arc appears to cross in front of the metal leg of the feeder support, whereas the deer is obviously on the other side of it. Also, even though the deer's head changes angles between the two shots, the orientation of the green arc remains the same. It may not even be the same deer in each, since the second shot actually occurred before the first, according to the time stamp. My guess is an internal reflection of some sort, possibly even originating from some object outside the field of view of the camera, that just happens to coincide with the deer's position.
