Thanks for the comments y'all! I actually used my ol' Nikkor AF 75-300/4.5-5.6 to get this guy. I was on the pier shooting the sunrise and this fellow came cruising in and stopped. I switched to the 75-300 and got as low as I could and made a few photos... He didn't stay around long...I think it was looking for a handout. It was probably 10 feet from me and I don't get that close when we are both on the ground, but being on the pier I felt fairly safe.

Great closeup Jim with neat eye reflection...is the pier reflection in the gator's eye the pier you were on...would really be neat to get this photo with your reflection in the gator's eye...
