This one stumped me. When I shot it I thought that it was a leucistic or possibly juvenile, Red-tailed Hawk but once I got it on screen, no clue...

I'd say it is a lineatus race juvenile Red Shouldered Hawk. That or a juvenile Broadwinged Hawk. The more finely striped tail feathers make me lean the Red Shouldered direction.

Was it a forested habitat? That would help confirm

Aransas NWR is a mix of coastal prairie and some forested areas

Good shot, glad you got him because it gives me an idea of what I saw at work the other day. I think he was after the pigeons.

Will leave the ID up to the experts, but I like the shot.

Are you sure this is not a juvenile red-tailed hawk? It looks like it would have that characteristic V on its back if we saw the entire back. The multiple narrow bands on the tail are also common with juveniles as well and it looks like it has a belly band as well.

Pretty sure... All I have to go by is Sibley's and BNA Online. Neither has a first year juvy RTH that even comes close to this shot.

Michael - one of the hardest things about identification of many hawks is the variability in the plumage, RTH are especially variable. RTH are very common in many areas and create lots of identification issues. ID is made by the features of the hawk over matching plumage, I have had lots of issues identifying them over the years.

Beautiful bird! Juvi Red-tailed, like this one here, I'd say....

A Juvi Red-shouldered would have yellow in the beak and coloring in the chest like this one here...

The general gestalt of that bird says RTHA. The head is what says it the most. The BWHA/RSHA have smaller heads.

That tail sure is long though!
