Rough Legged Hawk - 12-08-2011, 01:29 PM

Critique: NC:

I couldn't believe how close this one let me get, so I just kept shooting as it was very cold... 8* I also have one of it spreading its wings but using the shutter release it just didn't turn out as clean as these.

Thank you, I could have shot over 500 or more frames, as this hawk really didn't care or appeared not to care that I was there within 10 yards. Every time the hawk would look down, I shuffled up a bit closer, until I just didn't want to chance loosing him/her. I did get 46 frames, before I was cold and numb.

I think that's a Rough-legged Hawk rather than a Red-tailed.

Great shots. Hard to get that close to hawk normally.

Excellent series of photos Jon...nice exposures...always like to catch birds when they fluff their feathers...cudos for being out in 8 degree temps...btw what is the perch that the hawk is sitting on?

Nice series of images, good job on getting the images. You had very nice light on the bird.

The bird looks like a Rough-legged Hawk to me. I use to see them quite often when I lived in Colorado.

Scott you could be right, after I looked at some images of both of the ones I mentioned earlier, I better get me a book for future references

Ron that is a wheel line irrigation system, that operates above ground.

MichaelW getting this one was worth the wait, as I had seen it several times up high, but the sky color (overcast clouds) distorted things. And the other morning the hawk was farther down the wheel line system. On this mornings shot it was located just the second wheel in on the line from the road, and I figured its now or never

Thanks Jon...I suspected that it might be an irrigation wheel...just a suggestion - you might want to go into edit and change the title to Rough-legged Hawk...
