Birding in the great state of Colorado - 12-19-2011, 07:53 PM

Critique: NC:

Birding in Colorado can be alot of fun and a great way to beat the heat in our hostile summer weather. The beauty of shooting there is seeing the birds in their natural habitats all summer long instead of shooting them at the drips in the same habitat we all have seen over and over during spring migration. This was my second trip there in the last two years and am planning on making it a yearly venture. If you can camp for a week or so,and go with a friend to share expenses, the trip will not cause you to go bankrupt.
Here are just a few from my trip this past summer.
The species are,House Wren,Spotted Tohees,Lazuli Buntings,Western Tanagers,Stellers Jay,Dark-eyed Junco,Pine Grosbeaks;male and female,Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler in full breeding plumage and a Clark's NutCracker.
Hope you like and thanks for looking.

Great stuff. We went to Colorado this May (BRRRR!) and did a bit of birding as well. No Pine Grosbeak or Nutcrackers, but we did see some cool birds.

Those Audubon's Warblers in breeding plumage sure are stunning. I love the shot with the worms in the beak.

I bet it was chilly in may.I went in early july and went to RMNP.It's been very productive both times I've gone.Another cool place to go is Pawnee Grasslands in extreme NE Colorado. This year was disappointing there as the roads were washed out and I got stuck in the middle of nowhere, but a kind farmer pulled me out with his tractor.
Thanks for the kind words as that Yellow-rumped was my favorite of the trip also.

It was a real good time, especially being in the mountains where the temps dropped to 45 deg at night. There was no drought there and the mesquitos were pretty bad in some areas.

Oh my gosh! Dennis, what a treat to see so many birds that I never see around Houston and such beautiful photos. I have wanted to visit Pawnee Grasslands for quite some time and I will put RMNP on my list!

It's not your average place to go shoot(Pawnee).I was skeptical at first, then we started seeing burrowing owls and Swainsons hawks,Lark Buntings,Pronghorns and lots of other stuff.Just be careful if you get a good rainstorm as this place can flood and wash the roads out.RMNP really rocks!!!!!!!!

That was most enjoyable series, Dennis! I need to start saving for my next trip up there. I'll for sure give you a call when I do.
