Backyard Feeder (Warning) - 12-24-2011, 10:48 PM

Critique: NC:

Doug's shot of the Hawk in his backyard reminded me of a young Hawk that visited my backyard recently. I had completely forgot about him.

Shot with a MKIV and 100-400.

Jim, He's got a mouse! Cool shots.

I'm trying to learn to ID birds. My guess since it is a young bird and has a red eye, maybe a Red-shouldered Hawk? I was thinking maybe Coopers or Sharp-shinned, but those juvis have yellow eyes.

Jim very fine shot. this is probably second choice for a meal. These ones usually go after small birds.
Patti, this is a young adult cooper's hawk. I am no good with ID, but I have few of these around my house and looks familiar.

It doesn't pay to be mousing around in Jim's backyard.
Nice catch Jim.

Thanks everyone for you comments and look.

GSM your right about the ID and meal choice. Found remnants of small birds in my backyard to attest to your observation. I even had a Horned Owl visit and take down some of my squirrel population.
