BBSP - Testing Extender - 01-01-2012, 06:02 PM

Critique: NC:

I have never been happy with my 1.4 extender so I decided to do some microadjustments the other day. I have been itching to try it out. The Hawk shot is heavily cropped. That location it way past the stand alone trees into the marsh. There was so much activity out there by the Northern Harriers that I could never have gotten. Even though it is better I still need to fine tune some more. First time to see Spoonbills there so tried them as well. I want a 800mm (oh that is right Nikon doesn't make one).

Super! I was trying to dbl stack yesterday when shooting in Surfside. I have to say the number one frustrating feeling when shooting wildlife is not being close enough. It goes through our head every time we crop a picture.
I wish the big lenses weren't so expensive.

David, I don't think the focus is the main issue with the raptor shot. The tail feathers are sharp because they are not moving as much as the wings. The wings are not sharp as a result of a too slow shutter speed compared to their movement. At least that is what I'm seeing.

Autofocus isn't as fast with the 1.4x extender mounted on the 500mm. At least I see it on my Canon 500mm F4 and 50D.

I like the narrow DOF and color palette in the shot, especially the dried grasses. The marsh area you're talking about must be Pilant Lake. It sits north of 40 Acre Lake. The raptors spend a lot of time roosting on those lone dead trees out there while searching for live food on the ground.

Thanks Doug. You certainly nailed it all. I went back to see my shutter speed and sure enough it was only 1/125. It's a wonder it came out. I am still trying to narrow the gap.

+1, Was min apt 5.6? Bumping the ISO up might help raise the SS but then you will have to deal with noise issues.
I kinda like the first shot, even tho the wings are a bit blurred, I like the show of motion it gives. The warm colors of the grass and the way they mix with the rest of the photo also adds to the interest I think. The only way Ill get to 800 is rent it, then thats iffy a best. LOL.
See ya tomorrow.
