New Year's Day Success! - 01-02-2012, 07:59 AM

Critique: NC:

The fog cleared and so did I out of the driveway yesterday morning to look for subjects. I started out in La Fittes Cove. I was amazed to find hummingbirds still here. I just followed their little tweets and looked for something green sitting on a branch.
It was pretty easy.
I also found a Harris Sparrow there. The ducks were plentiful but they all were back lit.
Then I wanted to see if anything was in Quintana but on my way there I found a very cooperative White tailed Kite in Surfside.
Nothing going on down at Quintana except a nice Osprey in Freeport on 36.
Lastly I went to visit my Red tailed Hawk juvi friend in Chocolate Bayou. He was in the same spot as always.
He was perched on a very nice clean branch this time. Didn't have to do any cleaning of twigs this time. He gave me a break. LOL
Enjoy.

I am surprised that Hummers are still around after all the cold weather. All nice shots.

Great series Sandy! Looks like the osprey is enjoying a crab dinner.

I'd love to know how you manage to find those kites - great shots of a cool subject.

The osprey is actually eating a fish. The scales are hard to see. The fish was half gone when I found him eating on something.

The kites are pure luck really. These past couple months are the most I've seen ever.

Thanks for looking.

I heard several while I was there. I wonder if it's because the surrounding residents are leaving out feeders?
Though I did not see them leaving to go anywhere.
It was strange and sad really.

Congrat's of a good start to the new year Sandy. You've been getting lots of good practice lately and the quality of your shots has risen a quite a few notches over the past year. Good work.

Thanks, Tim that means a lot to me. It's taken four years going on five to get here. Still learning by the day.

Looks like a very successful road trip to start the new year...nice hummingbird photos...love those eyes on the Kite...what was the Osprey eating? Great job Sandy...hopefully we'll bump into one another somewhere down the road in 2012...was out at San Jacinto Park over the holidays and saw a pickup truck parked with a Cheetah sign on the door...started to stop and ask him if he knew you...

Ditto what Ron said on those Kite eyes - great job in getting some light on them. Whenever I photograph those Kites, the eyes are usually way too dark or if I get the eyes right, the feathers are blown.

Enjoyed seeing them all!

That was probably me. I was out there for a little bit standing by. I'm everywhere! LOL

I went down to the Dike this morning and found some Buffleheads. That was pretty neat I thought.

See you down the road I'm sure.
