Cold Saturday at BBSP - 01-15-2012, 09:41 AM

Critique: NC:

It was a little foggy and cold (around 34 deg) at BBSP when I got there at 6:30am. I was the 2nd car in the lot at 40 acre lake, so someone else got an early start. No wind but frost on the ground everywhere.

The recent rains have been good to the park. Creekfield Lake is as full as I've seen it. The 40 Acre Lake water is still lower than normal, but looking much better. Pilant Lake is now a lake again. I have a pano in this group of photos that shows it. Looking left to right from the top of the Observation Tower...40 Acre Lake, Pilant Lake and the Spillway Bridge Trail. Water on both sides going to Spillway.

The fog made it hard to get some sharp shots early on as it was right on the ground. You could get above it on the tower.

Nice series Doug! I really like the pano shot. I was going to drop by there yesterday morning, however the 34 degree weather kept me in bed.

Very cool, pun intended, shots Doug. I really like the tricolored heron and fog shots. It was a little warmer at Bolivar, 39 deg.

Thanks Patrick. I had decided ahead of time that the cold would not make the decision for me. I wanted to see what the last rain did for the park and just get out. The pano was handheld with my 24-70mm as I walked around the outer edges of the tower. I just tried keeping the horizon in the same place in all of the shots.

Warmer outside air maybe, but that water is about 53 degrees that you crawl around in. Makes me cold thinking about it. The fog shot with the Belted Kingfisher was done in Silver Efex Pro 2 and the tower in Color Efex Pro 4 Details Enhancer. Was it foggy at Bolivar?

No fog at Bolivar. I was actually sweating except for when my boot started leaking.

You were thinking the same thing. I was ready and set with my wide lens but things changed. I had been wanting to take it from the observation tower. Pretty neat pano and fog shots. Like your set, good job!

Tim...punch a hole in the boot or wear it out?

David...Thanks. The pano was my main goal to start the day. Since the fog was on the ground it worked out for the best for a little while anyway. You can't stand in the middle of the tower to take the pano without including all the posts in the shot, so walking around the outside was the best option.

Some mighty fine captures Doug. I was hoping the rains had helped out there.

Michael, Fred, Ron, Jim and Leon...thanks. It was a great day out there. I even got a shot of a Shrike, but the fog made it too hazy to get a sharp shot to post.
