BIFs from BBSP - 01-15-2012, 06:18 PM

Critique: NC:

Dropped by BBSP this morning despite the 39 degree weather. It turned out to be a beautiful morning until the clouds rolled in. Saw quite a few birds...here's a couple.

A young Roseate Spoonbill

and the always majestic Coot (I swear I don't know how these guys stay in the air!)

Sweet spoonbill.

The coot is like the bumble bee: it shouldn't be able to fly, but it defies physics.

Saturday I couldn't get the Spoonbills from behind the island on 40 Acre Lake. I could see them all huddled up close to the cut between the islands. Love the background on the Coot shot. That's pretty sweet. The book on the Coot is that the adults don't need a running start, only the young'uns. I think that's inaccurate since I haven't seen one get up yet without first running halfway across the lake.

Thanks Doug - the spoon was actually on approach for a landing with the pack hanging out behind the island. I got lucky and caught him just as he was starting his flair. I've never seen a coot get in the air from a standing start - I'm almost surprised that they don't need a catapult to off the ground (water)!
