I've never seen one this dark before...most are green or light brown. It's not a very good photo but I only got two shots before it moved out of camera range and this was the better of the two...made on Hoot's Hollow Trail at BBSP last March.

Nice. One of the guys in my back yard tend to get dark brown to match the pots. Haven't seen him get that dark though.

That certainly is a strange color morph for a Green Anole (A. carolinensis), but that's what I think it is. The black blotches behind the eyes are usually indicative of a stressed male.

There are Brown Anoles (Anolis sagrei) spreading around Texas at the moment as well. I have seen them on the coast and in the Rio Grande Valley. For a second, I thought that is what this might be but it isn't.

Like most I usually see the green version. I like how it blends into the setting. Good eye to catch this one.

Thanks for the comments everyone! And Chris thanks for the information.... I shot a small green one about 20 minutes before I spotted this one in the under-brush on a dead log. I wish I could have got some more of it in the open, it was too shy and ran for cover. I stayed around about thirty minutes hoping it would show again, but I never saw it again.
