... that a group of jellyfish (aka jellies) is called a swarm or a smack? -- now you do. I have no idea as to why the swarm/smack is "swimming" downwards, but that's what they were doing at the time.

Amazing how clear these shots are. Were they in a tank or were you actually swimming with these guys?

Thank you everyone - I appreciate your comments.
David, the jellyfish were in a huge tank (Monterey Bay Aquarium) -- being in the water with these guys would be very painful. The black sea nettle has long tentacles (25 feet or longer) that can deliver a painful sting (these looked to be in the 10-15 foot range).

I was wondering. I have seen videos of people swimming around jellyfish and I can't imagine. I remember a few times on the ferry in Galveston seeing thousands of jellyfish in the water. It makes me not want to swim in the ocean.

Beautiful! I was lightly hit by a jelly in Jamaica when I was a child, and just that little bit hurt like crazy.

There are some jellies that do not really sting. There is a marine lake in Palau where there are tons of them and people swim with them. jellyfish lake - Google Search
I have seen the Monterey exhibit and loved every minute of it. They are most mesmerizing. Funny when I was there that were also swimming down.
