Here are some another shots from our trip. The pelican was approx. 50ft away flying low over the waves.
On a side note: I could just kick myself for missing the shot of a lifetime. We were boating in St. Joseph's Bay and dropped anchor to do a little fishing. We had seen a pod of dolphins a few minutes earlier, didn't get any good shots of them either, when we heard a loud splash.
We all turned and saw the most amazing thing -- a Mobula Ray (commonly mistaken for a manta ray) leaping out of the water about 100ft away. I had my camera in hand and was poised to get a shot of it in mid air. It leaped out of the water 3 consecutive times and I was ready for the fourth leap that never happened.
Turns out it is a common thing that mobulas do. Still amazing though. I found this site with some great pics of mobulas doing just that.
