Attention All Tiger shooters. - 04-24-2005, 08:12 PM

I would like to ask everyone to check there schedules and see if you can attend the last 3 shoots . if we cant get them at least half full for each one we will have to call them off. These may be the last ones till summers end if we can't continue to fill them.

Please go back and look at all the wonderful photos.
http://lifeatf8.com/phpBB/viewtopic....94&start=0

Also if any of you are members of any photoclubs lets get them out there.

We will work out something .

We need your help.

Please we are hungry

we are getting tired ( no pun intended ) of chewing on these old rubber things

they are hard to pass

and they really don't taste all that good.

So please check use out we are worth it , our health and our lives depend on YOU. :D

I'd love to get out there... any restrictions on age? My almost 15 year old son is also getting into photography and would *love* to go... he adores big cats.

That's ok.. the second gate is the one that lets you get close? Is it worth going for him if he can't?

Hi Brad,

Here's a shot of Trey and his son. You can see the difference between the inner and outer fence. It's not bad at all except that over the two hours of shooting, he did tend to get bored (ask Trey about the camel).

That's not so bad... so I guess the only other question would be would it cost him $50 also? :) One, I might be able to swing...

Hey Tom,

I'm ready to go back. The only date I can't make is May 28th. I'll settle up with you on another choice very soon.

For those thinking about it, here's a few shots with some notes on preparing:

#1: You get close to the tigers. Really, really close:

#2: This was taken at 270mm (no cropping). If you have a 200mm, you're assured good pics. Faster lenses work better due to the morning light and shade from the trees (and you can always use flash)....

#3: You're there for 2 hours so get creative! This was taken using a Lensbaby.

This is a great opportunity, it's challenging to get that "action" shot and you get to test your accuracy in exposure, white balance and timing.

One added note: This shoot doesn't require a high-caliber camera. Any camera (including P&S's) would do well with these animals in their surroundings, especially considering how close you can get to them.

Considering that the money goes to help feed them, it's worth every cent.

Hope this helps,

_/oe

Hi Brad,

"Worth" is pretty subjective, so I'd say you and your son may better be able to determine what seems worthwhile to him. The 2nd gate to which Tom is referring is indeed the one that allows you to enter the area closest to the cats...that is, within their reach of you. The cats are enclosed in 4 separate cages, with Sugar being in the front. Or, maybe there are 5 cages and I'm forgetting where the 5th is at...I know they had 5 cats at one time, which suggests a 5th cage unless it was removed. I'm not even certain what the 1st gate is, unless that would be the gate into the property itself or I'm again forgetting something.

Regardless, here's a quick map of the cage layout...no attempt at making it to scale or accurate, but rather to just give you some reasonable idea of how things are laid out. All areas in white represent where photographers have access to wander around the cages and photograph the cats. Those not permitted inside this area can only observe from outside the outer fence. With a long tele lens, your son could perhaps still get some reasonably good photos, albeit with fencing to interfere with the image. As I recall, there is access for walking around the outer fence on all sides. I'm also thinking that perhaps the area I've shaded in gray on the left of Rocky's enclosure was also accessible to some extent, so that's a minor goof.

As long as your son doesn't get too anxious while waiting on you, I think he might still enjoy a visit.

Hmmm...seeing that I've cross-posted with Joe's comments, his photo depicts the walkway around the cages is broader than I guessed...more like 7 feet, at least along the side where Trey is shown. The width does vary throughout the area.

Excellent images Joe! I've still got to review mine in detail, but overall I think I did better on my first visit.

Hope this helps,

Daryl
