Theres a trail in Kingwood near the college that ive been thru. Its very nice and has a lot of birds, ponds and creek. Theres no blinds but benches instead. I stalked some huge woodpeckers around. There were also some nice hawks and some songbirds. Its pretty nice. Dont recall the name of it.

edit

I googled it. It turns out to be Evan's Gully Trail at Kingwood College. They have plans on more boardwalks and blinds. It was nice 5 years ago and i bet its nicer now. Heres a link for you northsiders.

Texas Bird Photography sites - 02-02-2012, 08:02 AM

In SE Texas, Orange, at Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center, just off IH 10, there is a very nice bird blind over looking Ruby Lake. In the spring and early summer the lake is filled with Great White Egrets raising their young. Along with them, there are Roseate Spoonbills, Snowy Egrets, Cormorants and Anhinga's. There is also a family of Wood Ducks that can be seen swimming around the lake. The Cormorants are seen most of the year and this winter White Ibis, a few Great Whites and Snowys have been visiting the demonstration ponds in the courtyard area getting the snails out of the ponds. Along with these water birds, there are many neo-tropicals that can be seen flittering around in the trees in the spring. Sorry, we do not have bird blinds set up for them. At times you might be able to see one of several alligators that swim in the lake to catch anything dropping into the water. And of course there are turtles too. The price is $6.00 entry, if over 60, $5.00 per person. Come check us out as the birds will be arriving in the next month and setting up residence.

If you are in the DFW area, you NEED to head over to the UTSW Rookery this week just north of I35E on Inwood Road.

The rookery is FULL of nesting birds - I saw Great Egets, Snowy Egrets, Black Crowned Heron, White Ibis and Cattle Egrets this Sunday morning. NO one was there.

There are babies and fledlings in the nests and there are many clear shots that you can reach with a 200mm lens.

Don't WAIT - this is THE week.

Highly recommended!
