I sent my e-mail already. Pay attention to the subject line, also. This place is too special to allow trophy hunting. There are plenty other places in Alaska to hunt. If you're lucky enough to venture there, you'll be changed forever.

Hi Chris: I'm really sorry I missed your 1d2n. But back to the subject at hand. My email will get off tonight. I can not believe that they would even consider allowing hunting these bears in that area. Congrats on your canon award(I'm assuming that bear shot was you)

The fact is what Alaska Fish and Game Commission decides is really not any of your or my business. You might visit but it really is their decision. I personally love bears, I have been in numerous states, provinces, and countries where they live and flourish and hope they continue to do so. I have photographed, hunted and taken a pile of bears, and have cherished every hunt, and would hope this opportunity will carry on for years to come.

The plain fact is what the commission decides will I hope be for the betterment of the species, in that given area. Obviously something has alerted the biologists that something has gone wrong or needs to be addressed for this very issue to be addressed.

So before you go blasting the people who are in charge of wildlife in their area you should realize that sometimes things are done for a reason.

Photographers should realize, and I am one, that wild should be wild and to get that great shot should maybe not be the result of a select area where the wild animals have lost that wildness, sadly directly due to man himself.

i posted to your copy and paste on the FM board. read the link! I did NOT blast you, or anyone else. Please get you facts straight, the people who have run the area for 30 years, are completely against it. I have no problem with hunting, but there is a time and place for everything and this ain't it! you made the perfect point. the area is in a way "manmade" as you said. It can't be fixed by a slaughter. So I guess letting some trophy hunters come in for the sport of it? Where is the sport? if it is allowed there it affects all areas of the entire Katmai preserve. It is not uncommon for them to roam 100 square miles. It will change the whole behavior and habits of all bears in that area. And yes my friend it is my business and yours. the descions we all make everyday have consquences for the years to come, for all.

Thanks for your efforts, Chris. For more info, see my 2nd response to your post in the Open Forum with the reference from today's Anchorage newspaper about the growing opposition to this proposal.

Easy now...

This thread is already bordering on the political side so please keep the discussion civil.

That's sad that they would do that there and I hope they change their minds about that.
