Trip to Bosque - 03-07-2007, 09:00 AM

Hello guys,

I know that late November to December is the best time to visit Bosque but I have a chance to visit in late March. Has anyone being there around that time frame or know what to expect as far as wildlife, especifically bird, photo opportunities?

David Cramer on Nikon Cafe reported last week all the geese and sandhill cranes have gone from the Bosque. That is about 98% of what you would go there to see. There remained some eagles, hawks and some others, but with spring fast approaching, who knows...

On the other hand, there are a lot of photograhic reasons to visit that portion of New Mexico besides just Bosque.

That's too bad. I'll have to plan visiting Bosque late this year. While it's true there are other photo opportunities in that area, the reason I wanted to take a several hundred-mile-one-way detour was to visit Bosque and see the geese and sandhill cranes in large numbers.

I'll concentrate on the other part of my road trip, which is taking me to Tucson for 4 days. There's plenty of birding and landscape photo ops there. I'll be visiting Saguaro NP, probably the Chiricahua Mountains, and other locations around Tucson.

Tahnks for the info re Bosque.

Your time is probably better spent in Arizona, but if you really still want to catch the sandhill cranes this month, they can still be found in the San Luis Valley, CO. Monte Vista is having their annual crane festival this weekend. Great Sand Dunes National Park is the other big attraction in that area.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm headed to SE AZ on Saturday and I've got lots of locations to try.

I've driven through the area quite a few times but never had a chance to stop and explore, so I'm really looking forward to four days of intense photographic activity.

You might try The Pond at Elephat Head. Bill Forbes has this neat setup. http://www.phototrap.com/

Cursor down to Arizona Birding.
