Congrats on the new D-max too.

You know I'm just suprised you claimed me as your nephew... I guess I really am moving up that list.
Well what do you expect First you want to limit me to how long you can go... and then you want to limit me to when you can go

I wouldn't get too excited about being claimed

The drive from Cortez to Dolores is not all that interesting. The drive from Dolores to Rico, and then past Lizard Head to Telluride is spectacular!

If you drive a vehicle with any ground clearance at all, i suggest you drive the road that follows the West fork of the Dolores River, it splits off right before Stoner, CO, and turns to dirt after a few miles. It does go up and over and drops down, just North of Rico. The high meadows at the top are just stunning.

Cortez to Dolores - Agreed

I should have plenty of ground clearance... Just past Rico... there is branch to the west towards Dunton. I was thinking about taking that... have you ever gone that way?

You know John... that's not a bad idea. I've been that way before but it was a long time ago. I've travelled the "Capulin route" dozens of times...

You know I think that's the same road I'm talking about. IRRC, Dunton is a completely private town, like you may or may not be welcome there. Let me dig up my old map of the area and make sure.

Edit: Just checked, that's the road. The road from Rico up is fun, lots of switch backs and single lane w/ turnouts. :)

Thanks,

That's not a bad idea Russell. I think that I'll add Childress and Palo Duro Canyon to the route It's starting to look like a three week trip for sure... I hope nothing comes up to hose it up...

Micheal, Just plan your route and just go! Keep an eye out for photo ops as they present themselves and just wing it for two weeks. Oh, and don't forget to have fun! I'm sure we're all looking forward to seeing the results when you get back.

As is -- It looks like you are heading through Lubbock, so you can stop in and pick me up on the way. I am a bit envious of the trip. I took a 4200 miler back in 2004. Straight up to the Badlands, Rushmore, Devils Tower, Yellowstone, Jackson WY, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, and then back home. I want out again one of these days soon. Have fun on your trip.

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!
