Back from Tanzania. Some images to share. - 07-11-2007, 10:22 PM

Well, I just got back from Tanzania after being gone for 3 weeks. For those that don't know, I lead photographic safaris in Africa, teaching photography in a beautiful setting with as many animals around as possible.

On this particular set of back-to-back safaris, I took the following standard safari setup with me:

Canon 1DsMkII
Canon 1DMkIII
Canon Rebel XTi converted to infrared
500mm f/4
100-400mm
24-105mm
1.4x and 2x teleconverters
580EXII flash with Better Beamer

And here are a quick view of some of the images that I have quickly processed. I have over 60GB of images to go through, and these are the images that don't require any or much work at all. I processed them in Lightroom 1.1, averaging about 5 to 10 seconds per image. So I anticipate processing them more meticulously when I have the time.

Elephant, Tarangire NP. Canon 1DsMkII, 500mm, 1/640 @ f/4.0, ISO 500

Lioness, Serengeti NP. Canon 1DsMkII, 500mm, 1/500 @ f/8, ISO 200

Lion, Serengeti NP. Canon 1DsMkII, 500mm, 1/13 @ f/32, ISO 100

Running Ostrich, Serengeti NP. Canon 1DsMkII, 500mm, 1/6 sec @ f/22

Sparring Elephants, Tarangire NP. Canon 1DsMkII, 500mm, 1/400 sec @ f/8, ISO 400[

Great shots, love the first shot of the elephant and the lion in motion. I would love to visit Tanzania. Our next trip to Africa will be to Zambia to visit my in-laws, my wife is home sick. I'll be looking forward to shoot at South Luangwa NP.

Excellent shots! I've always wanted to go to Tanzania, but I always end up going back to Botswana.

Aside from the subject matter.... your photos really exhibit a wonderful sense of composition. That's what does it for me.

Especially the first shot... everybody loves elephants, and elephant shots...but framing it purposely with the tusk (and the tip of the tusk more specifically) in the dead center of the frame with the eye.

THAT is the finest example of the difference between a guy with a camera on a safari, and a photographer on a safari. Wonderful wonderful stuff.

They're beautiful. Going on an African safari and taking photos of the wildlife is my ultimate dream. I can't pick a favorite but I love the lion and the entangled trunks!
