Reefkeeping is my primary hobby right now. I actually started getting into digital photography to take better pictures of my reef tank.

There are a lot of varibales that come together that make it tricky - live, unpredictable subjects, refraction, glare, etc.

Does anyone here do any aquarium photography who might be willing to share some tips with a hobby group? We'd like to do a hands on type of workshop. We have access to a location with some extremely nice saltwater and freshwater tanks.

Definitely not an expert (or an intermediate for that matter), but I do love fish and enjoy taking pictures of fish in aquariums when given the opportunity. I was at San Marcos Springs in June and they have a little aquarium there and got a couple of shots.

My first tip would be to get a circular polarizing filter to cut the glare off the glass.

I’d also shoot at an angle and not perpendicular to the glass to help reduce glare as well (I’m pretty sure this is correct, at least it is what I do).

A flash would be good, (even though I don’t own one and the pictures taken below were with the on-camera flash) and a fast lens like a 50mm f1.8 or something to that effect (again, something I don’t own personally I just use the kit lens, but would love this lens).

Hopefully some of the more experienced people will correct and/or fill in some more helpful info for you.

Be sure to post your progress!!! I love seeing some fish pics!!!

Here were some of my better attempts (sorry for reposting the same pic).

Butterfly fish? (Chaetodontidae?)

Longear Sunfish (Lepomis megalotis)

Rio Grande Cichlid (Heirichthys cyanoguttatum)
