Damselfly and Little Nature Enthusiast. - 10-21-2007, 11:55 AM

I had the pleasure of meeting Elan and Bob yesterday morning at BBSP while I was hunting Damselflies on 40 Acre Lake. It’s always great to put a face with a name. Hope I see you guys again soon!

#1 - I found this one and got one image that was worth processing out of about 20 I shots I made. Doggone wind and he wouldn’t be still! He finally flew away after I pestered him for half hour or so. Every time I’d setup on him he’d move again. But that’s part of the fun for me.

#2 - I’m not sure if it appropriate to post this image in this forum. I usually don’t photograph people, just nature, but I couldn’t resist the temptation of this one and it’s in a nature environment, so maybe ya’ll let me slide. The little girl was maybe 4 years old and really enjoying her hike with her dad. When they walked by me she was asking one questions after another and he was taking the time to answer each one. I could hear them talking as the made the turn in the path. This was the ideal way to end an extremely good day for me. I thought about them on the drive back home.

Yeah those damselflies can be quite a challenge!
I love the picture of the daughter and dad. Maybe she'll become a nature nerd, also!

Thanks everyone for taking the time to look and comment I truly appreciate it. And Bob I’m sorry ‘bout the mistake of saying you were Tim in my post. I’m dreadful with names, but hardly ever forget a face. It was really nice meeting you guys and I’m thankful you corrected my ID mistake. I was still thinking about that little girl and her dad today. An excellent memory for me!

Nice work, Jim. Damsels are quite the challenge. Getting good light and a patient (non-skittish) damsel is tough. You did incredibly well with a notoriously difficult subject. And if you're getting 1 good one for every 20 shot you've found the knack.

Warm regards -j

Jim thanks for the kind comment. I started trying my hand at damsels this year because with digital format I can see the results almost instantly, but it’s still difficult to see if it’s “really” sharp on the camera display screen, but it gives me a chance to check composition anyway. When I get home I check the sharpness. I use an AF80-200/2.8 with a 27.5 extension tube and have to manual focus all the shots which is a task for my old eyes, but I hit one ever now and then. Again thanks.
