A few more entries from my time at the park, the ducks are not getting too close to shore yet except for the Mallards.

That new arsenal of yours is definitely getting you closer.

I found the best place to get close to the Canvasbacks is on the south side of the park in a little cove next to the concrete fishing pier.

With a 2x on your 600 you should be able to get pretty close. Try late in the evening so the light will be at your back. They move in closer to feed.

If you sit there for awhile they get friendlier. I think they are getting use to the fishermen so they are not as skittish at this location.

Love the composition of #2! I've never seen a Canvasback-gorgeous bird. I'm sure you're enjoying your new toys, Laurie!

Thanks Jim and Therese!
Jim I know the place you mean and I will give it a try.l I've been sick so I have not been able to go out and sit like I want to, hopefully soon though. I saw a Kingfisher at the marina yesterday but he was too far away to get a decent photo.

Are you wearing your camo?? hehehe. Duck calls will work on mallards. Throw out a few decoys and maybe a mojo mallard.....wait this is not the hunting forum. Nevermind. Are these from today? Yesterday was a good duck day but hardly any sun. I like the sharpness and composure in these Laurie.

Laurie, Love that mallard! The water looks so nice in the background.

And seeing the canvasbacks is a treat. I really look forward to seeing a close-up of them. I never see them around here and they are pretty.

Thanks everyone, to answer some questions:
Roy, yes I was wearing camo and the coots came close but the canvasbacks would not.
Mike, how can I put this..uuummm NO the lens is staying close to me for now
Henry, how safe is the area around Kidd Spring Park? Seems too close to downtown for my comfort level. But I'll check it out to see what it offers.

Honestly I can not tell you how safe the place is. Typically I go durring the week when I'm playing hooky from work. I can tell you that it is an area being reclaimed by the uppity ups.
There is a duck pond located in Huchins at the Rogers wildlife Rehab center. There you can see ducks and rehabilitated Blue Herons up close and in the cages any bird you can think of. I admit to going there and getting some excellent GBH shots that I could not get in the wild. http://www.flickr.com/photos/iforit/2139890198/
They are located off of I45, 1st exit south of I2o next to Fed x and across from Finn and feather.

I can meet you at Kidd Springs sometime or anyone else for that matter.
