A few birds from today. Dialup Warning - 07-23-2005, 10:21 PM

Went to Hornsby Bend near Austin a shot a few birds today.
Rained off and on so the light was variable.

Cattle Egret

Kingbird

Scissortail Flycatcher

This was the first Orchard Oriole I had ever seen

Painted Buntings.

This guy was heavily backlit. Had to combine two RAW files to get this.

Thanks for looking! :D

These are all exquisite, but the Painted Bunting is a pure delight. Fine, fine photography. :)

Excellent shots. I plan on going there soon. Do you have a really long lens or are the birds that approachable? I only have a 300mm. Will that be long enough?

Thanks Bburton and Steelsun! :D

Heinecke, most of these were shot with a 400mm.
Sometimes with a 1.4tc and sometimes not.
Your 300 will seem a little short most of the time but certainly not always.
The birds at hornsby can be cooperative somedays and allow you to approach closely and if you can shoot out of your car window it will help.
When hiking you will have to be sneaky.

Take some aspirins before you go it stinks there and the fumes can get to you.
