While driving thru the park slowly, I came across this little ball of feathers , I was probably about 15 feet from him.

Yeah, I think when you can see the talons gripping the bark that would lead one to think there's some great detail here. Well done Billy!

Billy, They are incredibly sharp and just really beautiful shots. I don't think they are Downey's though. I think Downeys are all white underneath - without the black bib or the color on the belly.

Could they be Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers?

I appreciate all your comments, I showed it to a friend and he said it looked like blood on top of his head. I was very lucky, driving thru the park late afternoon with sun to my back. Hmmm, now I wonder what it is. I found this picture of the yellow bellied sapsucker
