While driving thru the park slowly, I came across this little ball of feathers , I was probably about 15 feet from him.

Thanks Rachel, David, and Mike for the comments and for the ID, I was thinking it was a Downey Woodpecker.

Yeah, I think when you can see the talons gripping the bark that would lead one to think there's some great detail here. Well done Billy!

Billy, They are incredibly sharp and just really beautiful shots. I don't think they are Downey's though. I think Downeys are all white underneath - without the black bib or the color on the belly.
Could they be Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers?

Could they be Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers? | I believe you're right Patti. I was told today that it's a sapsucker.

Well, whatever it is, that's a wonderful portrait. I especially like #1.
I'd consider cloning out that branch intersecting his back ??

I appreciate all your comments, I showed it to a friend and he said it looked like blood on top of his head. I was very lucky, driving thru the park late afternoon with sun to my back. Hmmm, now I wonder what it is. I found this picture of the yellow bellied sapsucker http://sdakotabirds.com/species_phot...apsucker_6.htm
