How about a shot from a trip on which I wish I'd had any camera other than the 1 megapixel (yes, I said 1 megapixel.. as in less than most new cell phone cameras) point and shoot Kodak that I had... this was shot on a Whale Watch tour out of Plymouth, MA in Summer of 1998

I started trying to take photos in the early 80s when I borrowed an old Yashica SLR from my mother. I took a lot of shots over the next 10 years or so, but was never happy with the outcome. My major focus was trying to get good pics of reptiles and amphibians.

One afternoon sometime in the early 90s, I was working at the Savannah River Ecology Lab and someone brought in a Queensnake. I had never seen this species before, so I wanted to photograph it. But for the first time, I decided to rely on the two most important photographic tools - a plan and patience. When I got my slides back, I was happy with a snake shot for the first time ever! From that day I realized if you think and are patient, you can get the shot you want...

Yes, there are things I would do differently having a lot more experience with snakes now, but at the time, I was very happy with this shot. So this was a pivotal photograph for me.

The first image I took that I really liked was this arangement of flowers. This was taken in 2003 with an olympus model 3040. It was a 3.2 meg camera but it had a sharp f/1.8 lens. It was slow to start up, slow to focus, and was slow between shots. But it produced great colors and the lens was very sharp for a point & shoot camera.

Sorry, it doesn't meet the intent of the forum, but it was what got me back to SLR's (and indirectly dSLR's) because I knew I could have nailed this even harder but I couldn't control the exposure. And for all the moaning about having 1 Mp... I had .3Mp on this shot--Olympus D-220L, purchased November 1998.

Warm regards -jim

Whew... I don't think I have anything from that far back... All I can find are these shots and they were taken 22 years ago. My first shots were taken when I was about 8 (I didn't say good) which was just a bit before what I'm posting. I had just got my Canon F1 and 70-200 f2.8 lens (I miss the F1. It was a great camera) and took a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park to wring it out. These are scans from slides...

My first pictures were done with film cameras many years ago. When my first child was born in 2001 I was on my second digital camera, an Olympus D450, 1.3M, a nice little camera. My first digital camera was this weird DSLR without manual controls, the Olympus D600L. I moved up to the Olympus E-10, which I loved! My film camera was (and still is) a wonderful Olympus OM-1, which I still use ocassionally, hence the purchase of digital Olympus cameras. I switched to the D70 when it first came out, and then to the D200 and recently D300. I am a Nikon photographer now, except when the film nostalgia hits me and I get my mint OM-1 out of its leather case. Here is a picture of my son, three days old, with the D450

I took this right after buying my first dSLR and I started lusting for a lense so long I need help carrying it. Still lusting. That was also when I started looking at PhotoShop so I could clean up artifacts on the photos. I did get PS2 and still trying to learn it's features.

This image was taken with a Yashicaflex when I was about 19. Many people on this forum who are about that age are already better photographers than I was. I did find
photography to be addictive, and I had to have a camera after taking a class in photography. The photo was taken with the camera that was loaned to me for the class. I didn't have a camera, yet.

The photo explains a lot about my grades. I hung out with the people playing cards between classes rather than at the library.
