Looks like a Red-Bellied Woodpecker to me. Wish I had more time but it was all of a sudden and I was just about on my way out the door to go to a shoot when he showed up. I think I could of gotten some better poses. Hope he comes back!

Thank y'all for looking and commenting. It really was grab shots too but I wanted them pretty bad and I honestly was surpised I could hand hold the 400mm 2.8 even though it was for a short time.

Roy these are great! This looks like the male… he’s got some red on the lower portion of his face. I’ve got a pair of them I’m keeping an eye on out at park I go to every week. In fact I need to go check on them next week because I haven’t been over there in two weeks. I’m hoping to get a look and maybe some chick photos as well in a several weeks. I didn’t see them on the last visit but I could hear the female calling from the nest.

Very nice Roy! From the title I was expecting a duck, though :-)

Great shots Roy. You nailed the exposure on these. I like the first one the best. My only recommendation would be to try to clone out the misc. branches on that one.

Thanks again for the comments. Much appreciated. Hope everyone that wants a chance, gets a chance for a woodpecker this season. It's kind of hard to miss one with this much brilliant red. I agree with Jim on it being a male. The short time I was able to see this one, he was a little skittish too. If I lined up for a shot, he'd move around to the other side. I haven't seen him since that day...
