I had shot some mediocre wildflower images this morning, and I was heading back to the car when something orangish red caught my eye. At first I thought these were those orange tape things that surveyors use, but alas it was a gorgeous flower!
I don't know what it is exactly, so maybe someone can enlighten me.

Sony Alpha 700, Minolta 200mm macro lens, Plamp, Gitzo 3540LS tripod, cable release, natural lighting, f/16, Memorial Park near the soccer fields

It’s a beauty!! Have you got one of the whole flower? I may have it in one of my books. I can’t tell from this one… But it is red!!

Thanks Jim! I deleted the whole flower because the background was horrible. It looked like a Prickly Poppy but orangish/red.

Okay Jim I thought I had deleted all of the whole flower shots, but I didn't. I'd like to be able to photograph this flower again earlier in the morning to get a better background with the whole flower.

Therese,
That's a color explosion. I like the whole flower shot best.

Thanks a lot Billy! I want to go reshoot the whole flower shot. By the time I found it this morning, the light was getting too harsh.

This looks like a red poppy. I don't know if they are native.

Thanks for the comments Jill and Janice!
I went back later today to reshoot the whole flower with better lighting, but it was closed up. I don't think it's native to Texas, either.

Excellent image Therese! Much better than the actual flower.

I wonder if Hummingbirds are attracted to it? I may have to plant something to attract them and butterflys...

Thanks guys! Billy with all that brightness of color, it would seem hummers would be attracted to these flowers.
