Boot Scoot - 07-01-2008, 12:37 PM

Hello, I have been working really hard to get a better background on "my" chrysalis- lots of scoot, scoot, scoot, readjusting my tripod legs' heights repeatedly. I used a gold-sided reflector to try to bounce some nice lighting back toward the top especially where a shadow was showing. It sometimes is getting frustrating , but I'm sticking with it. Thanks for looking!

Sony Alpha 700, Minolta 200mm macro lens, Gitzo 3540LS tripod, cable release, gold-sided reflector, f/16, natural lighting

I know this might sound insane but I have had them before in my yard and I actually was able to pull some off (that were in bad locations) and move them to better locations. I just used a pin to attach it to its new location and everything worked out OK. It is sure interesting to watch all the changes they go through.

Hi Greg,
I'm too much of a purist. I just can't take something from nature and move it somewhere else. Also I'm taking thes images at a public arboretum, so I have to be good. It sure would make things easier, though

Purist huh, I was more thinking about moving it to another spot within nature, not bringing it into a studio ;)

Oh okay, but would you do this at a public arboretum?

Probably not but I don't feel bad about doing it in my own back yard.

I don't have a yard, so all my photography is done at public parks and arboretums.

Greg, I'm assuming you attach the pin to the leaf. I know the Chrysalis is attached to a pretty strong thread type of thing. That would be a cool trick to use if it was in your own yard, as long as it doesn't affect the progression of the life cycle.

I basically got the idea from looking at the ones in the Cockrell Butterfly Center at the HMNS. If you are very careful you can cut the point where the chrysalis is attached to the branch. I have used pins to then poke through what is left of the “stem” to overhangs on my house. At one point I had some in very inopportune locations around my patio so I relocated them so they wouldn’t get smashed.

How cool-you're making me want a back yard, Greg, but the only problem is I don't like yard work.

you sure do like this little guy! The background is getting better, but this one has a very bright spot on it where you used your reflector

You're right about the bright spot, but they all have it-reflector or not. Yes, I've become very attached to the "little guy", so it needs to emerge in my presence.

Thanks so much, Laurie-I still think the emergence stage is a couple days off.

Hi Jim! Thanks about the bg. I wasn't really looking for the chrysalis when all this madness started. I think it will emerge in maybe a couple more days (not like I'm an expert but just a guess).

I think tomorrow one place I want to go besides your "new place" is where once I found an Owl Fly(a few weeks ago), now that I know what it is. I photographed in gorgeous light, but I cut off the antennae. I was just getting a record shot since I was already worn out. Looking forward to tomorrow's adventure!
