Blue Moon’s Winged Sun Reflector Hunt - 07-29-2008, 05:17 PM

I spent a long summer weekend at my ancient fish & game club chasing bass, shooting dragons, sun reflectors (a.k.a. Egrets), and other impossible handheld targets. White birds have always been my nemesis but since daddy always said that you don’t fail until you stop trying here is evidence of my latest attempt.

These were shot handheld from my small and unstable eleven foot boat with my soft zoom while shadow casting for bass with the other hand… The last one is a little dark because I shot it with my iPhone camera with only available moonlight because I don’t have the optional strobe yet. Fortunately it has an auto white bird moonbeam setting that came in handy. ~Blue Moon

Love the contrast here.
Dark background, light bird.
The reflection with the wing in the water is very nice.
Well done,
Tim

Thanks for the feedback. As is often the case, our first shot is usually the most appealing. In this case the third shot down was actually the first frame shot in my burst as I targeted the sun reflector as it winged toward one of the ancient boat houses that I was the main subject of my shoot.

While tracking the egret I attempted to synch the rhythm of moment with the shutter release in hopes of capturing the wing down reflection shot. Sometimes the timing works out well. The second frame from my burst is actually the first and second image in this post shown in a wide and tight crop.

Thanks again,

Blue Moon

I am always amazed at your work.

I am guessing that with that user name you are the same person whose photos show up on "the fuge" from time to time. I lurk there quite often.

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for the feedback and give out a special thanks to Jim Victory for outfitting me with the 100-400L that I shot this series with. Jim is the real deal when it comes to being a subject matter expert on lens performance. I’m so appreciative of the time he spent mentoring me on the ins and outs of the push me - pull me 100-400L. Now if I could just talk him out of his 500L…

Darrell ask about another forum that I’m active on. Here’s the image packaged for the monthly assignment contest on that forum. Many thanks again for the kind words ~ Blue Moon
