Wow, I can't believe I missed this... - 12-11-2008, 08:55 PM

So it was back in October of this year that my Green Sea Turtle, Tripod was selected as one of the National Geographic Daily Dozen Photographs (I think it was Oct. Week 1).

Here's the shot (visit the link above it you want the complete story behind this shot):

Now, here's what I missed...goto National Geographic and scroll down to the bottom...wowzers...they selected Tripod as the Jigsaw Puzzle Icon...how cool is that?

Also, I will tell you that if you submit a photo to the National Geographic they will not notify you if they select the photo...and if I'm not mistaken they have the right to display it on any NGM medium (web, mag, tv, etc.). Now this being said, I was originally notified about Tripod, the green sea turtle being in the NGM Daily Dozen merely by someone commenting on the photo in flickr...if it were not for him I would probably have never known. You can see that comment and my follow-up in on the flickr page I provided in the link above.

Now for another surprise :D I was digging around on NGM some tonight and noticed they have a video section and in particular an "Our Favorite Reptiles" video...here's the link to the video which is embedded on the page: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/vi...234001&catID=1

And you we see this Fiji Island Iguana macro shot in the first 20 seconds of the video and my name "Roy Niswanger" on the first page of the photo credits at the end. Of course, as you probably can see, I'm flattered.

Congratulations and it is easy to see why! Gorgeous. I remember you posting the turtle before, if not here, somewhere else. The iguana is extremely handsome with wonderful detail and color. You have every right to be proud Roy. Outstanding!

Congratulation again.

question: do you just submit photos and they become the property of NGM, or do you just release rights to them to use them as they see fit ?

Thanks for the comments. Yes Stephen, I posted this awhile back both originally for help with the color of the turtle since is was a high-res scan of a negative...someone here on this forum was able to help me out and then a second time when I was selected for the daily dozen.

I just found out today abou the puzzle icon at the bottom of every page on ngm.com and just this evening about the reptile video.

Tom, I'm really not sure exactly how the rights work, but I'm pretty sure they have the right to use them as they see fit.
