Fire in the sky

This is a discussion on Fire in the sky within the Nature and Wildlife forums, part of the Showcase category; I rarely look in this section, but I'm sure glad I did this time. Excellent image Bill!...

how do you calculate that exposure, thanks?
I start _very_ early in the morning! No really, I get out there about an hour and a half to two hours before sunrise. As soon as the camera's meter says I can shoot 30s I do, generally stopping down about a stop (or maybe 1.5) to retain the mood. As it gets lighter I watch the meter and histogram. Depending on what I want (foreground or sky) I'll either stop down a bit from the meter, or open up a bit (and blow part of the sky).

In this case, with the clouds helping, I could actually retain some detail where the sun was rising while getting enough exposure to still show some detail in the foreground water.

Thanks Tim. Great, you really need to! We spent a total of 15 days there this past year (I only worked seven days in December :-)

Thanks Patti! I took Barbara to REI before the first trip and she bought some gloves and a knit cap, she didn't want anything more (she already had a warm coat). Before the second trip she made me take her back so she could buy a pair of overpants like mine :-)

Great capture. Good the clouds came out for you!

Thanks Joe! We were getting a little worried, there were a couple "nice" sunrises, then Saturday (this day) was fantastic, and Sunday was pretty good too. The second trip there was nothing (relatively :-)

Thanks Roy. I don't know for sure. I think the altitude helps, and I think all the dust in the air helps a lot too. When the clouds roll in in layers, it's just amazing.

Thanks Scott. I was wondering what you were doing in the nature forum!

Whoops, just fixed my typo -- I meant 30s! That's the longest I can get without putting the timer release on, and about as low as the meter can go. I sometimes go longer, at which point it's sort of a combination of guessing and experience :-)
