What a cool shot Jim! I would not have passed it up either and I am sure glad you did not.

I miss this thread somehow. Jim, I really like the DOF on this one. The sharpness and detail is just amazing. I'm excited for you. This is a prize.

Thanks so much Laurie, Sandy, and Johnny for looking and taking the time to comment. I love to shoot snakes when I can find them...It's just hard for me to find the rascals.

Absolutely great!

By the way, if you could get a different lens for this type of shot, would you and what?
I am interested in good wildlife shots of various creatures.
Tks.

that is very impressive. Amazing colors and detail

just goes to show you how many people are wrong when they say that lens is unusable about 200mm.

Dennis thanks for the comment... it's difficult to answer your question ... Every photographer has different priorities in nature photography and that's something that they decide. I carry 3 lenses with me every trip and they are a 24 mm, 105 mm macro, and 75-300 mm or 80-200 mm. I like using my old AF 75-300/4.5-5.6 because it's very lightweight and reasonably sharp at F8 - F22 and has pretty nice reach at 300 mm... With my camera crop factor of 1.5 it gives me 450 mm. I also use it with a 25 mm tube for shooting dragonflies, butterflies, and other shy critters. I do a lot more of the closeup type photography than wildlife, so what I use is not going to be intended for everyone. It's a multi-propose lens for me and my style of shooting. A lens in the 300 to 400 mm range is fine for most wildlife subjects. Canon has the 100-400 lens that is used by several folks on this forum and they get outstanding photos! I hope this helps

Thanks Mike! I think it all depends on the subject...heck I believe I could have got this guy with my ol' 80-200/2.8D, but with the 300 mm zoom I had a little more working room and didn't worry it.

Kenny

Thanks Kenny! I'm going to be going out there tomorrow morning, my wife is on vacation starting Wednesday, and we're doing some stuff Wednesday morning, but Thursday and Friday morning are go to the park days for me. It'll be good the rest of the year so there is plenty of time. Let me know your schedule and we'll have a go at it!
