Western Cottonmouth - 04-04-2009, 07:56 PM

I finally managed to get out for a few minutes this afternoon, but there wasn't much bird action at the Baytown Nature Center. Between lot's of people fishing and the dried up ponds, I saw only a few birds.

However, I caught this handsome devil trying to sneak across the road.

All shot with a Canon 50D, 100-400mm @ 400mm, ISO800, F7.1 - 5.6, no flash
Range: 6.5' (min focus distance)

Great job on these Mike. I have shot plain ol' water snakes like this but I don't know if I could get down this low with a poisonous one.

Very nice. I'm partial to cottonmouth shots myself. That last one is awesome - focus, DOF, composition, tongue flick - the whole package!

Wow 6ft on the ground straight in front of it.. I'd be shaking too much to pull that off...

Just picked up my 100-400 from a fellow TPF member today. Cant wait to get something like this. I would certainly welcome the 6 ft minimum focus distance in this case. : )

Some people would think you are nuts to try that. I think it's fun as long as he's sniffing. Were you close enough to smell him?
