New 85mm f/1.4 vs the old one? - 10-02-2010, 03:15 PM

I'm curious if Nikon's new 85mm is as good a piece of glass as the older, highly-prized 85mm f/1.4 but haven't seen anything about. I couldn't even find it through Pbase's lens categories.

Does anyone have any insight?

I have the new Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 G and have been extremely pleased with the glass all around. I can say in all honesty that I can see simple improvements over the old 85mm. Are those improvements worth the extra money? Depends on you the shooter to decide. Portrait wise I love the glass.

I never had the old one. I just did a shoot with it yesterday and the autofocus was dead-on in low light. I love the lens. I cannot wait to try some outdoor portraits! It is also so much lighter than my ex-canon 85L, and the autofocus is so far ahead of the canon lens. My only complaint is that it is so silent that, at times, I am not so sure it is working. Tri
