Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S - 07-22-2008, 11:50 PM

Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S

Taken at Phoenix International Raceway.

The 14-24mm is one of Nikon's newest releases. Super sharp, this lens takes vivid, saturated images. CA is very low but will show up when zoomed all the way out (can be easily corrected in Nikon Capture NX). Distortion from this lens seems incredibly low which leads to a very pleasing result.

Opinion: The new standard against which all wide angle zooms will be compared. This lens is a must for any photographer who shoots wide.

Example:

Nikon D3 : @14mm : 1/800th : f10 : 200 ISO : Matrix metering

Joe,

Thanks for the post - I ordered this lens today!

How does it do indoors at close quarters shooting portraits/groups?? Any issue with "stretching" those folks at the perimeters or distortion at close range?

Yeah, there really is some stretching issues but nothing that isn't expected at that focal length. I shot a group of 50 people and had to give it plenty of room at the sides so that the distortion wasn't noticable. After a simple crop the image was fine.

And I certainly wouldn't use this as a portait lens close up unless I was going for a specific angle/look but it sounds like you know what I mean when I say that.

Looking forward to more photos from this lens on the D3. Please post up if you have. I am thinking of getting this lens first instead of the 24-70.

Got one, and I must admit it is a very sharp lens. Heavy as all get out though....

I have the 12-24mm f/4. I understand you get the larger f-stop with the 2.8 but has anyone done a comparison? Specifically, I'm wondering if the wide f range is worth losing the 2mm on the widest zoom.

Thanks for reading,

It is a superb lens, no question about that. It better be for the price. I love it myself. I will look for some samples and post them.

This thread is not what I need to be looking at when I'm deciding between this or the 85 1.4 right now!

I just got my 14-24 in. The 2.8 is a nice improvement over my 12-24 Sigma. Here is a shot from the past weekend:

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_czQGZQ7qNK0/Sb...2/DC3_4890.jpg

Here is another from this past weekend in NOLA:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_czQGZQ7qNK0/Sb...g/DC7_6361.JPG

I keep trying to put the images as an image link...they appear...and then the disappear. Any ideas??? Even when I link as JUST a link...it messes up.

I did get this to work: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink and http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink

It's like Picasa Web is changing the URL, but it isn't...it immediately doesn't work.
