I have both the 80-200 f2.8 AF-S and the 70-200mm f2.8 AFS VR. I love the 80-200mm f2.8 AF-S for it's sharpness, speed and neutral color. This lens is definitely a user and I save it for times when I don't want to risk the VR lens, but it never fails to perform.
Image data: Nikon D70S, bracket mounted SB800 for light fill, off camera Vivitar 285 above and slightly to my right to balance light. Nikon 80-200mm AF-S was set at f5.6, 92mm, 1/125 second. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

Nikon D200 : @125mm : 1/125th : f2.8 : 125 ISO : M Mode : 0 Exp Comp
*CORRECTION: lens used for this image was not AF-S version. It's actually the older push-pull version of the 80-200 f2.8D AF-ED.*

I also have the AF-D two ring version and love it. Has anyone had a problem with the M/A ring/switch braking or cracking? I am now experiencing this issue.

I have one and love it use it for all my sports. I had to send mine into nikon to get the M/A ring switch replaced and I think it is going bad again because it won't stay locked into the A position. I am thinking gafers tape to hold it in place.

Here is an image I shout a few years ago with a Nikon D2Hs. I was photographing this stallion for a client. The shot was done at ISO 400 SS 1/1250 and A f7.1.
Personally, I have used most of the 80-200 and newer 70-200 except for the very latest and the older 80-200 f2.8 AF-S is the sharpest and best lens in this range and that includes the Canon versions I have tried. I would love to have three more of these lenses just in case. Mine is getting very used as it has been used for most of my work over the last 8 years.
This lens has been my ticket for an awesome journey.

This is at the Elgin rodeo at night with the 80-200mm f/2.8 two ring version and NOT the AF-S. Shot with a D700, ISO 3200, 1/250th sec at f/5.6 zoomed all the way to 200mm. I, too, had to have the spring on the manual/automatic switch repaired at Precision Camera in Austin. It's a common failure on the lens and not difficult to repair. I have sold the lens and replaced it with the new 70-200mm which I am not sure is sharper. That is an enormous compliment to the 80-200mm as the 70-200 is like a razor. All I really think I gained is VR II

Since you are trying to freeze fast action, you are usually at 1/500 or above. In daylight you are probably at 1/1000 or above, so VR is pointless.
I used to have the 80-200, but sold it for the 70-200 VR1 back in October of 2008. I wished I would have kept it. The only thing better about the 70-200 is the extra 10mm at the low end.
I would post some pics taken with it, but they wouldn't look nearly as good as my ones taken with the 70-200 because I was using the D100/D200 back then.

OK, after doing some digging on my hard drive, I found this pic taken back in 2007 with the 80-200 and the D100. This is cropped only. No PP whatsoever (sharpening, WB adjusting, etc...)
Not to shabby for old technology:
Sorry, this was taken with the AF-D, NOT the AF-S.

Since there is a lot of discussion about 70-200 vs 80-200 - I thought I would ask some advice here.....I have a Nikon D40 - looking to go with the new D7000 as an upgrade; for a new lens upgrade, I was thinking of the 80-200 due to the price difference and what seems to be a minor difference in quality (and vr) from the 70-200. Good choices? I do a lot of portrait photography and currently use my 55-200 lens for most of it; also photograph cycling - so looking for something good for lower light situations in that regard. Thoughts or perspectives appreciated! --Susan | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
